Pilates Benefit #3: Balance
Pilates greatly assists with Balance!
Balance is an important but often unnoticed factor for reducing injury when we move through our everyday lives.
By improving our balance, we can actually lower the risk of falls. This is especially important for older people, who are at more risk of serious injury when falling.
With Pilates, we strengthen the core, and encourage balance both through stability and through balanced movement.
When last did you trip, fall, or bump into an object? Recently? If you think you’re just naturally clumsy, it may in fact be that your balance needs work.
“I used to trip and fall all the time. Over uneven surfaces when running outdoors with my dogs. Or I’d go for nature walks with my family, and trip over the slightest, smallest rocks. I’ve been doing Pilates for just over 2 years now, and have noticed that my balance has actually improved, and I haven’t had a fall in ages.”
In Pilates, we often performing standing exercises that require balance. By training the core to engage correctly, we’re able to move through balanced movements with more ease. Even non-standing Pilates exercises can help strengthen up the correct muscles required to help with balance and reduce the risk of falling.
Try this now:
With your feet parallel, hip-width distance apart, rise up onto your toes and hold this position for 30 seconds. Stumbling? Try it again, but this time pull your navel towards your spine. Much easier, right?
